The key to getting better sales figures on any product is to hit the right chord with your advertising. Feel good ads are probably the most effective.

One of the best organic product ads around at the moment must be for Innocent smoothies. Everything about their labelling and advertising makes you think ‘how cute, how healthy…I’ll buy these for my kids!’ And the fact that Innocent have now teamed up with Sainsbury’s and Boot’s to raise money for old people with the Big Knit just wins you over even more. A healthy product and a worthy cause – what could be better?

Of course, there are plenty of other food and drink ads that have caught the nation’s attention over the years, even if they haven’t always been organic! Who can forget the series focused on the Oxo family as the kids grew up and we saw them at different stages of life round the dinner table.

One of the best current ad series is the lager drinking agony uncles, Brad & Dan, who sit in a beach hut in Australia, dispensing words of wisdom to British men calling them on their helpline.

Brad & Dan always have a can of the golden brew close to hand, while they help the British boys with some puzzling dilemmas. There’s John from Norwich who wants help deciding whether he should wax his hairy back before going on holiday. He gets put straight by the boys who sign off telling him: “Remember Jacko; waxing’s for cars.”

So far, Brad & Dan have never been at a loss for words. They can sort pretty much any dilemma out in less than 30 seconds. And the kind of advice they give, although it’s obviously all in good fun, could actually be quite useful and often is actually a really ‘good call’ – as they put it.

The boys have been counselling British lads for a couple of years now, and it doesn’t seem likely that they’ll run out of good advice anytime soon!

It can be hard to achieve a balance between the Ying that is fairtrade, locally sourced, organic produce, and the Yang that is BOGOF, rock bottom prices and money-off coupons.

Many of us love a bargain. Discounts, sales, free gifts, half-price on Fairy Liquid – bring ‘em on, we cry. For we enjoy the challenge of living frugally and making our money go further.

Yet the more ethical, Mother Earth-loving, eco-worrier side of our personality is uneasy with this kind of consumption. While we are saving pennies buying ready-made supermarket goods to rustle up our quick meals, who is losing out? Who made the things we’re buying? Who profits? If we don’t try to live more ethically, we can’t moan about the state of the world. It’s up to us to set an example to our children, and we do that by taking action on a daily basis, not simply donating £2 a month to Friends of the Earth and forgetting about it.

However, what if you’re a single parent with three kids? Maybe it’s hard to buy eco-products and organic food when they cost much more than their heavily discounted counterparts. On the one hand, our bank balance is saying we can’t afford to live a truly green lifestyle; on the other hand, the planet is depending on everyone to do just that. “The main way we can care for the earth is by using less of its precious resources”, says Marie Sherlock, in her book Living Simply With Children. So take heart. Saving the planet means reducing consumption in all its forms. Perhaps there are savings you can make in one area which will free-up money to enable you to shop more ethically. The money you save by using comparison sites to get the best deal on insurance, utility bills and so on, can be spent on eco-versions of the groceries etc that your household would normally buy. Every little helps!

It’s a cliché, but it’s true: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Giving you energy to get going in the morning and keeping you satisfied until lunchtime, a good breakfast is important, so make sure you whip up something satisfying and tasty that you’ll really enjoy.

Cereal and toast can sometimes get a bit dull and predictable, especially if you have them every single morning. Breakfast needn’t be boring however; a cooked breakfast is a delicious way to treat yourself in the morning and doesn’t have to be unhealthy either.

As a free range farmer, healthy recipes for breakfast using meat such as organic pork are something I’m always on the lookout for. A good old English breakfast is a staple favourite in our household at the weekends, and there are plenty of ways in which you can make it that little bit healthier; it doesn’t have to be swimming in grease and fat to be tasty!

For a traditional cooked breakfast that’s not artery-clogging or cholesterol-building, swap friend bread for toasted (a personal favourite is wholemeal Hovis bread) and use a lower fat olive oil spread in place of full fat butter. Grill your tomatoes and poach or scramble your eggs instead of frying. For your pork sausages, bacon or other main protein, use the grill instead of the frying pan for a much healthier cooked breakfast that tastes just as delicious. And of course, choose quality, organic meat.

For a healthy breakfast beverage, choose skimmed milk with your coffee or tea; it not only contains less fat and calories, it actually has more calcium! Ditch the sugar in your cuppas and add a fresh orange juice. If you also include extra baked beans, mushrooms and other vegetables you will ensure that you not only fill up on the healthy options, you will also be well on your way to your five a day before you’ve even reached lunch time!

If you are looking for ways to improve your diet and feel healthier, then switching to free range pork and organic meats is one of the first things you can do to make a positive change.

Free range pork and meat is not only generally thought of as better for you, it is also a much more ethically-sound way of enjoying meat. And organic meat is of course free from harmful pesticides and other chemicals which can damage the environment. Do you really want those pesticides and chemicals in your food and your body?

For anyone who wants to feel and look their best, going organic and free range is a great starting point. This is of course just the first step. It is also important to eat a varied and healthy diet, incorporating all the food groups and the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Avoid things like caffeine, alcohol and too much saturated fat, and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as enough protein and complex carbohydrates. Drinking enough water is also vital for feeling and looking great; aim for about 6-8 glasses over the course of the day (herbal teas and diluted juices count too).

Once you have sorted out the inside of your body, you will find that the outside of your body and your exterior appearance reflects the new, healthier you. You will want to make the most of your new and improved appearance, so refine your beauty regime and invest in trusted, quality beauty products such as Oil of Olay. Moisturising every night will make a big difference to your skin and build on the good work that your healthier diet is already doing. You can also try seeking out make up tips from friends or on the web to make the most of the brand new, healthier you!

Pork is sometimes referred to as the other white meat – alongside chicken. Depending on the cut that you choose, pork can be a very healthy addition to a balanced diet.

It’s a meat that contains plenty of essential minerals and vitamins, including niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, zinc, magnesium and potassium as well as vitamins B6 and B12. With a lean cut, with all the extra fat trimmed off before cooking, pork can be low in calories and fat when eaten in moderation. A reasonable portion size is about 100g per portion.

When cooking pork you should ensure that the centre of the meat is cooked thoroughly to a decent heat to ensure that the meat is properly cooked.

In years gone by, pork suffered a bit of a bad press because of the number of cases of a parasitic disease called trichinosis, which occurred when under cooked pork with roundworm larvae was consumed. Now that there are much tighter regulations on what livestock can be fed – no raw meat, for example, – the number of cases of trichinosis has drastically reduced. Many people are also buying free range pork which is reared under better conditions and far less likely to be contaminated with anything untoward.

If you’re stuck for ideas for how to cook pork, Super Savvy Me has some great recipes to try – including ones that are good for young children’s tastes, too.

The leanest cut of pork is probably pork tenderloin, with only 3g of fat per serving. Boneless top loin roast pork and a top loin chop will have around 5g of fat per serving, and 2g of these five will be saturated. A sirloin roast with the bone left in will have a little more than 8g of fat per serving.

When you’re online or in the supermarket, don’t forget to keep your eyes open for any money off coupons for products that you can use in conjunction with your pork recipe selection.
